Communion Message #8
We instinctively know that dirt is not ideal. Even though we recognise that some dirt builds immunity, we wouldn’t expose ourselves to anything. We wash our hands before we eat because we don’t want to consume microorganisms. We wear shoes to prohibit the germs from attaching to our bare feet. We wash our knives so that we don’t contaminate good meat. We understand a lot more about germs in this modern world than many generations before us. Particularly with COVID, we recognise that a key prevention strategy is washing and hand sanitisation. At the core of this understanding, is the recognition that clean things become dirty when they both come into contact. We wouldn’t assume that the dirty product will become clean by contact. Unless that clean thing is a cleaning product. We know that when mud comes in contact with a shirt, the mud isn’t suddenly going to get clean...the shirt will get muddy. That’s science. In Luke 8:43-44, Jesus passes a woman with an issue of blood. But when she touches Him, something miraculous comes to pass:
And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased. (Luke 8:43-44)
Jesus is the clean one. The Holy One without blemish. When He touched this woman, it didn’t matter how persistent her problem was...He cleansed her and healed her. He was unable to be affected by her and whatever ‘dirt’ might have existed in her. The fact is she touched Him! But her touch had no real impact on Him.
Jesus is the only one who can consistently cleanse the sin, brokenness and disease that we might have. Because His blood is the purest substance, no form of material can withstand His cleansing power...when it comes into contact with Him. This is the power of His blood.
