Communion Message #4

When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfilment in the kingdom of God.”

After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” (Luke 22:14-18)

In the documented accounts of the Last Supper, there is this strange statement that sits amidst the discussion that I’ve never really heard much about. Jesus makes this promise: that He will not drink the fruit of the vine until the Kingdom of God comes.

In essence, Jesus is committing to a fast. Evidently, a very long fast, since we are still waiting for His return. He is saying that the wine that He shared with them would be reserved for that day in the future when they will all be able to drink it together again. It is quite remarkable that Jesus would make this commitment, since:

a) Nobody else made this same promise

b) And his promise didn’t really affect them.

What it does demonstrate, however, is just how special this great banquet in the future is to Him. It is so special, that no other gathering between the last supper and this coming great banquet will be worthy enough to be honoured with such celebratory beverages.

Because this banquet will be unification of every believer who has given their lives in service and worship to Him, with each other and the saviour.

THIS is the day for which our Lord eagerly awaits. When He can eat at the banquet table with us all.

We can all get very distracted in this life, pursuing different dreams and visions we have. But let us not forget the vision to which Jesus looks ahead: the great marriage supper of the lamb.
