Communion Message #1

Have you ever wished you could disguise yourself, so you could find out what really is happening? Parents?   

There’s a TV program called the Undercover Boss in which a CEO disguises themselves and works alongside those in the lower levels of the organisation. It is supposed to give them exposure to the awesome people who work for them and discover the areas that really need attention. He also gets to experience how arduous some of the tasks are.

To me, this all sounds very familiar. If you’ve heard much about the gospel you know that Jesus, King of Heaven does exactly the same thing. He comes down to our level…Earth. And He experiences life in a sinful place.

The one thing that’s really amazing about all this is that Jesus doesn’t come alongside us, like the CEO…Jesus comes and asserts Himself right in the MIDDLE of mankind. He completely puts himself in the game, as ONE OF US.

In Luke 23:33 it says:

“When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals - one on his right, the other on his left.”

The scripture is clear that there is one man to the right and one to the left. He is placed in the middle of these two men. And this is reflected in art depicting the crucifixion. He places Himself in the middle.

The picture of the gospel is not of a solitary cross. It’s the Christ who positions Himself SMACK BANG in the middle of mankind. Like a peer, or a friend.

He completely immerses himself right into the human condition so much so that he becomes sin for us, so that sin can be nailed to the cross. 

The Immanuel, which means God with us, is so much more than simply God being around. It is the God who IDENTIFIES Himself with us. Jesus is right in the middle of mankind.

We have an advocate who knows what it’s like to be one of us.
