Communion #22
1 Corinthians 11:26
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
When we take communion, we are engaging in one of the only rituals that the Lord Jesus instituted. Thousands of years old, this ritual is meant to do two things: it is meant to point to the past and the death that He so valiantly and humbly enacted for our sake. And it is meant to point to the future coming of Christ as 1 Corinthians 11 reminds us. It would seem that we have the former down pat. We often reflect on His blood and His body that He willingly sacrificed on our behalf. But often I admit, I forget about how it speaks to His coming. Time will tell if this is a ceremony that we will continue to participate in, in the future when He has returned and the Kingdom has completely come. But either way, this ceremony is a reminder of the hope we have because of the cross, in his return. When God's complete redemptive plan will come to pass. That which God has been waiting for, and generations of disciples have waited for. It is validation and motivation for our faithfulness.
